A major section of Boduthakurufaanu Magu on the northern side of Malé will be closed to traffic from Saturday as road development works move into the asphalting stage, authorities have announced.
The Maldives Police Service said the closure will take effect from midnight and remain in place until the completion of the works. The affected area stretches from Izzudheen Jetty to the Henveiru Ferry Terminal, covering a key section of the capital’s northern coastal road.
Police have advised motorists and commuters to plan their journeys accordingly and use alternative routes while the work is underway.
The closure comes as the first phase of the Northern Boduthakurufaanu Magu Development Project continues to progress. The project, being carried out by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), is one of the largest road redevelopment initiatives currently underway in Malé.
According to MTCC, sub-grading works are currently being carried out in Segment 4 of the project, while major utility-related works have already reached significant milestones.
The company stated that sewerage upgrading works within the project area have now been completed. Overall, approximately 52 percent of the project has been finished, including pavement construction, water network installation, curb stone placement and cable junction works.
MTCC also revealed that commissioning of the newly installed water and sewerage connections is expected to be completed within the coming week.
Efforts are additionally underway to complete a new storm-water pumping station by mid-June. The facility is expected to play a key role in reducing flooding and waterlogging issues that have long affected parts of the capital during periods of heavy rainfall and high tides.
Work is also continuing on the coastal protection component of the project. MTCC said capping concrete works will be carried out this week along a 130-metre section of the newly constructed quay wall.
The redevelopment of Boduthakurufaanu Magu forms part of broader efforts to improve traffic flow, pedestrian access and public infrastructure along one of Malé’s busiest transport corridors. The road serves as a vital link connecting government institutions, businesses, ferry terminals and commercial areas on the northern side of the city.
In addition to road expansion works, the government has also announced plans to enhance the area’s landscape. Speaking earlier this week, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said a dedicated greening plan has been incorporated into the project to improve the environment and aesthetics of the redeveloped corridor.
MTCC has previously stated that the overall northern Boduthakurufaanu Magu project is scheduled for completion by the end of June, after which the upgraded road is expected to provide improved traffic movement, enhanced utility services and better flood mitigation measures for residents and commuters.
