Maldivian passport holders can now travel to Azerbaijan without obtaining a visa in advance, following the implementation of a bilateral agreement between the two countries.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the visa exemption arrangement came into effect today, allowing Maldivians holding ordinary passports to stay in Azerbaijan for up to 90 days visa-free.
Agreement Comes into Force
The visa waiver agreement was initially signed on September 24 last year, as part of efforts to strengthen ties and improve travel access between the Maldives and Azerbaijan.
Officials noted that holders of diplomatic and official passports had already been benefiting from visa-free travel since June 18 last year, with the latest development extending the privilege to ordinary passport holders.
Conditions Still Apply for Long-Term Stays
While the new arrangement allows for short-term visits without a visa, the Foreign Ministry clarified that individuals intending to remain in Azerbaijan for extended periods, or those travelling for employment, education or business purposes, will still be required to obtain the appropriate visa prior to departure.
Expanding Travel and Connectivity
The government has described the agreement as a significant step toward making international travel more accessible for Maldivians.
In recent years, both countries have taken additional measures to strengthen cooperation in tourism and connectivity. This includes agreements related to aviation and travel signed in 2024.
Further enhancing travel options, the national carrier Maldivian has also established an interline partnership with Azerbaijan Airlines, aimed at simplifying routes and improving passenger convenience.
Officials say the latest visa-free arrangement is expected to encourage greater movement between the two countries while supporting tourism and bilateral engagement.
