Authorities have launched an investigation into a case involving a school student under the age of 18, after reports emerged that she is pregnant.
According to the Maldives Police Service, the case was reported earlier this week after a 17-year-old student was taken to a doctor, where the pregnancy was confirmed. The matter was subsequently brought to the attention of police on Monday.
Officials said investigations are currently ongoing in coordination with relevant institutions to determine the circumstances surrounding the case.
Information available indicates that the student is in Grade 11 and had continued attending school in recent weeks. She is also reported to have participated in certain activities during this period.
Authorities noted that the case came to light after the student sought medical attention with the support of family members, following signs that prompted concern.
Under Maldivian law, cases involving individuals under the age of 18 are treated with heightened seriousness. Legal provisions require that any suspicion of abuse or exploitation involving a minor must be reported to authorities, including the police or the relevant social services.
The law also states that engaging in sexual activity with a minor constitutes a criminal offence, regardless of consent. Pregnancy in such cases may be considered as evidence of a potential offence.
Officials emphasized that ensuring the physical and psychological well-being of the child remains a priority. Necessary medical care and support services are expected to be provided as part of the response.
Police have not yet released further details as the investigation continues.
