HDh. Nolhivaranfaru Island Council has raised several development priorities with Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef, including calls to begin planned road and school projects and accelerate other infrastructure works on the island.
The council met with the Vice President at the President’s Office, where representatives outlined challenges facing the community and identified projects they want the government to prioritise.
Among the main requests was the early commencement of the island’s road development project, alongside construction of a new school building.
Council members also sought improvements to sports infrastructure, including upgrades to the existing football and futsal grounds and broader development of facilities available for sporting activities.
Maritime infrastructure was another issue raised during the discussions. The council requested an upgrade to Nolhivaranfaru harbour, which serves as a key transport link for residents and the movement of goods to and from the island.
The council additionally called on the government to expedite ongoing work on the island’s Police Station and sought improvements to services available through the Health Centre.
Vice President Latheef assured council representatives that the concerns would be communicated to the relevant government authorities. He also pledged to follow up on the progress of the issues raised during the meeting.
The discussions come as the government continues to engage with island councils over development priorities across the atolls, with infrastructure, healthcare, education and sports facilities frequently among the areas raised by local authorities.
Nolhivaranfaru has also recently seen activity aimed at expanding essential services and infrastructure.
Fenaka Corporation previously completed electricity network extensions developed to serve 100 housing units on the island, including 825 metres of low-voltage cable and 12 distribution boxes.
Waste management is another area currently under consideration. The Nolhivaranfaru Council recently held discussions with senior management of Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) over existing waste-related challenges and preparations to establish formal waste management services on the island.
The latest meeting at the President’s Office focused on progressing the council’s wider development priorities, with the Vice President committing to coordinate with relevant authorities and closely follow up on the issues presented.
