President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has declared that the political turbulence that previously affected the Maldives has ended, saying his administration has established political stability while allowing political leaders to freely pursue their activities.
Speaking at the inaugural session of the People’s National Congress (PNC) Senate, President Muizzu said achieving comprehensive and lasting stability has been a central objective of his administration.
As his presidency approaches its third year, Muizzu said no political leader has been imprisoned under his administration and maintained that the culture of politically motivated retaliation has been eliminated.
“As we approach the third year, not a single political leader has been jailed. No political leader is in prison. We have refrained from any acts of political vengeance. Today, no political leader should fear pursuing their political objectives,” Muizzu said.
The President also said there are currently no restrictions on public assembly, adding that more venues are available for gatherings without prior notification than in the past.
His remarks follow similar statements made during his Independence Day address in July, when he said his administration had ended political retribution and expanded democratic freedoms. The President’s Office has also previously recorded Muizzu’s pledge that his administration would not pursue politically motivated revenge.
Turning to freedom of expression, Muizzu said political speech, publications and other forms of expression remain unrestricted within the boundaries of Islam.
“There are no hurdles to the freedom of expression. However, we must all accept the sole limitation that always exists: as Muslims, we must remain within the bounds ordained by Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala,” he said.
Muizzu has previously linked freedom of expression and democratic participation with the country’s Islamic and constitutional framework. In his 2026 Independence Day address, he said his administration had made progress on press freedom and freedom of expression within those parameters.
