Football fans in the capital can now catch the FIFA World Cup 2026 action on two large public LED screens after State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) began broadcasting live matches at key locations in Malé.
The initiative allows supporters to watch the tournament in a public setting as excitement builds during the Round of 16, with several football giants already eliminated and the competition entering its knockout stages.
According to STELCO, live broadcasts began on Monday night at its City View LED screens located near Dhivehi Raajjeyge Adu (Radio Maldives) and the King Salman Mosque.
The company said the move is intended to give more football fans the opportunity to enjoy the matches together, particularly as existing public viewing venues in the capital have drawn large crowds throughout the tournament.
The plan to broadcast the matches was first announced when STELCO signed on as a partner for Public Service Media’s (PSM) FIFA World Cup coverage. At the time, STELCO Managing Director Dr. Ali Azwar said the company was working to make use of its outdoor digital displays to bring the tournament closer to the public.
With the World Cup now reaching its decisive stages, the additional viewing locations are expected to help ease congestion at other screening venues while giving supporters another opportunity to experience the tournament atmosphere alongside fellow fans.
The FIFA World Cup 2026, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, has attracted widespread interest in the Maldives, with public screenings, cafés and fan zones across the country drawing thousands of supporters for the tournament’s biggest matches.
STELCO’s latest initiative adds to the growing number of community viewing spaces established during the competition, allowing residents to gather and follow the world’s biggest football tournament together.
