The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has issued a Yellow Alert for the region stretching from Baa Atoll to Vaavu Atoll, warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, strong winds, and rough seas this afternoon.
According to the MET Office, wind speeds could reach up to 40 mph during squalls, while heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected across the alert area. The Yellow Alert remains in effect from 12:45 PM until 5:00 PM today.
The weather office has also issued a White Alert covering the area from Baa Atoll to Dhaalu Atoll, which is valid until 4:00 PM.
Forecasts indicate that scattered showers will affect much of the Maldives over the next 24 hours. Winds are expected to strengthen in the northern and central atolls, with gusts reaching up to 35 mph during squally weather.
The MET Office said the unsettled conditions are associated with the ongoing Southwest Monsoon, locally known as Hulhangu. Northern and central atolls are expected to experience the most active weather, including periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms, while southern atolls are likely to see only isolated showers.
Looking ahead, forecasters expect scattered showers to continue across parts of the country over the next two days. However, widespread heavy rainfall is not currently anticipated during that period.
