President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to a free and independent press, announcing that he has requested amendments to the Media Commission Bill currently under review in the People’s Majlis.
The bill, submitted by Abdul Hannan Aboobakuru, independent MP for Thulhaadhoo constituency, proposes a seven-member commission with three members appointed by the President and four elected by media organizations. Under the current draft, the President would also appoint the commission’s chairperson.
Speaking during his visit to Nolhivaranfaru in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, President Muizzu made clear that he does not seek authority over the media. “I have already informed members of the PNC that I do not want this done in a way that gives me any control” he said. The President emphasized that the commission’s chairperson should instead be chosen through a vote among commission members.
Dr. Muizzu underlined that media independence is essential for democracy, transparency, and national progress. “I do not want any control in any way, whether in regulating the media or in its supervision. In my view, there should be complete independence, transparency, and responsible media management” he added.
The President called on all stakeholders—including political parties, associations, and media organizations—to fulfill their responsibilities by sharing truthful, fact-based information. He expressed confidence that journalists will continue to play a vital role in presenting balanced perspectives and clarifying facts for the public.
The bill also proposes stricter penalties for violations of the media code of conduct. Outlets may face fines ranging from MVR 5,000 to MVR 100,000, while individual journalists could be fined between MVR 5,000 and MVR 25,000. In addition, the Majlis would retain the authority to dismiss members elected by media organizations.
By firmly rejecting any undue influence over the press, President Muizzu has positioned his administration as a defender of media freedom—underscoring his vision for a Maldives where governance and accountability thrive through transparency.
