Segment 1 of the Malé North Side Boduthakurufaanu Road Development Project has advanced to 97 percent completion, delivering on President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to rebuild Malé’s road network into a modern, pedestrian friendly and climate resilient urban system. MTCC confirmed that asphalt works on the segment were completed yesterday, with road markings and signboard installations to be finalised within the week. The newly upgraded stretch will open to the public by Monday.

The project is central to the President’s vision to overhaul Malé’s congested streets and replace outdated, narrow corridors with organised, safe and accessible roadways. The widened carriageways along Boduthakurufaanu Road are designed to ease traffic bottlenecks, while dedicated pedestrian pathways enhance walkability in one of the capital’s most crowded areas.
A major component of the redevelopment is the new stormwater drainage network, engineered to reduce the chronic flooding that has long disrupted daily life in the city. By integrating modern drainage systems into road construction, the government aims to ensure long term resilience against heavy rainfall and weather related hazards.

As Malé’s largest road redevelopment effort in years continues, officials underscore that each completed segment marks progress towards a cleaner, safer and more efficient capital. The project reflects the administration’s commitment to deliver on its promise to create a people centered urban environment where mobility, safety and resilience drive development.
