Sri Lankan nationals counselled and released after a fight at Velana Airport taxi queue

Sri Lankan nationals were involved in a brief fight at the taxi queue area of Velana International Airport late last night after consuming alcohol at Hulhule Island Hotel, according to information shared with authorities.

The said the incident was reported at around 12:15 am. Police officers responded shortly after and summoned those involved to gather details and offer advice to calm the situation.

Hulhule Island Hotel, located within the airport island, is a popular weekend spot for expatriates to consume alcohol, as it is the only licensed venue in the Malé area.

Police confirmed that those involved were counselled and that no serious injuries were reported. Police said they are continuing to look into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Videos of the hand fight circulated on social media today, with posts claiming the altercation broke out while the group was waiting in the taxi queue.

Police said they remain alert at busy public locations, particularly the airport, and will respond quickly to prevent similar incidents and ensure the safety of passengers and staff.
