The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the Maldives Meteorological Service (MMS), and the Maldives Red Crescent (MRC) to strengthen crisis management, emergency preparedness, and coordinated response efforts at Velana International Airport.

The agreements were signed during a special ceremony held under the theme, “Airport Crisis Management.” The event was attended by MACL Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, Minister of State for Climate Change, Environment and Energy Ibrahim Mimrah, senior representatives of the partner agencies, MACL Deputy Managing Director Mujthaba Latheef, members of the company’s Executive Committee, and senior staff.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed said the agreements represent an important milestone in enhancing the airport’s preparedness for emergencies and crisis situations. He noted that, as the Maldives’ main international gateway, Velana International Airport depends on close coordination, effective communication, and collective preparedness among all relevant agencies.
Under the MoUs, MACL and its partner institutions will establish a formal framework for cooperation, aimed at improving emergency coordination, clearly defining roles and responsibilities, strengthening communication channels, and enhancing joint preparedness efforts.

The partnerships will also support regular joint training exercises, emergency simulations, drills, and capacity-building programmes involving NDMA, MMS, and the Maldives Red Crescent to further improve response capabilities for airport-related incidents.
MACL thanked the three partner agencies for their continued collaboration and reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining Velana International Airport as a safe, resilient, and well-prepared gateway for passengers, airlines, and the nation.
