Dhidhoo Land Reclamation Reaches 70% Completion

By Hussain Shinan Published 4 hours ago

Land reclamation works underway in Dhidhoo have reached a major milestone, with around 78 hectares of land reclaimed so far, marking 70 percent completion of the overall project.

The large-scale reclamation effort is being carried out by the Maldives Airports Company Limited (Maldives Airports Company Limited), as part of a broader plan to support airport development and housing expansion in the island.

According to project details, the full scope of the work involves reclaiming a total of 115 hectares of land. Reclamation activities officially commenced on 5 January 2026 and have progressed steadily in line with the project schedule.

The operation is being executed using Leiv Eiriksson, one of the world’s largest trailing suction hopper dredgers. With a hopper capacity of 46,000 cubic metres, the vessel is capable of carrying out high-volume dredging efficiently, significantly accelerating the pace of reclamation.

Authorities have noted that the reclaimed land will play a key role in facilitating future infrastructure development in Dhidhoo, including airport-related facilities and residential projects aimed at supporting long-term growth in the island.

With a substantial portion of the reclamation already completed, the project is expected to move into its final phases in the coming months, bringing Dhidhoo closer to its planned expansion goals.
