Sixteen teams are set to compete in Ooredoo Masrace 2026 in K. Maafushi this Friday, with MVR 43,000 in prize money on offer as the annual event brings traditional Maldivian fishing into a competitive setting.
The event will take place on August 28 in partnership with the Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources, bringing together fishing teams and enthusiasts for a day centred around one of the Maldives’ oldest and most important traditions.
The winning team will receive MVR 25,000, while the runners-up will be awarded MVR 10,000. The third-place team will take home MVR 5,000.
Individual prizes will also be awarded during the competition. The Best Fisherman and Best Fisherwoman will each receive MVR 1,000, while another MVR 1,000 will be presented for the Biggest Catch, bringing the overall prize pool to MVR 43,000.
Ooredoo Maldives opened registrations for this year’s Masrace in July, inviting teams representing government institutions, companies and the general public to take part.
The company has positioned Masrace not only as a competition but also as an event aimed at celebrating the country’s close relationship with the ocean and preserving the communal spirit surrounding traditional fishing.
Fishing has historically played a central role in Maldivian life, serving as a major source of livelihoods and economic activity while shaping traditions that have been passed between generations. Although the industry has evolved considerably with modern vessels and technology, traditional fishing remains closely tied to Maldivian cultural identity.
Events such as Masrace seek to bring elements of that heritage into a community setting, with teamwork and friendly competition providing an opportunity for younger generations to engage with fishing traditions.
Ooredoo said this year’s event is also intended to bring together families, friends and communities, with participants ranging from experienced fishers to those taking part primarily for the social and competitive experience.
With 16 teams confirmed for Friday’s competition, the Maafushi event will see participants compete for both the team championship and individual honours.
