President Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the Maldives will not allow its territory to be used in any ongoing conflict, reaffirming the country’s position amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Speaking to journalists, the President said the government remains firmly opposed to the use of Maldivian land or facilities for military purposes by any foreign nation, stressing that national sovereignty will not be compromised under any circumstances.
His remarks come in response to growing regional tensions following recent attacks involving the United States and Israel against Iran. The President expressed strong condemnation of the strikes, describing them as actions that undermine the sovereignty and independence of nations.
He called for an immediate halt to the hostilities, emphasizing that conflicts of this nature should not escalate further.
Addressing speculation that the Maldives could be drawn into the conflict, the President dismissed such claims, stating clearly that no foreign power would be permitted to use any part of the country for military operations or as a base for attacks.
“The Maldives will not provide any opportunity or space for military action against another nation,” he said, adding that the country’s position remains rooted in peace and respect for international law.
The President also reiterated that the Maldives would continue to engage diplomatically with countries around the world in pursuit of national interests, while maintaining its stance on protecting sovereignty and avoiding involvement in conflicts.
He further stated that the government does not support attacks against any Muslim country and described the ongoing strikes as inconsistent with international legal principles.
The comments underscore the Maldives’ position as tensions in the Middle East continue to impact global political and economic dynamics, with the government emphasizing neutrality and non-involvement in military conflicts.
