Former President Mohamed Nasheed has expressed support for the Maldives’ proposed residency programme, describing it as a major opportunity to diversify the country’s tourism industry and generate new business opportunities.
Nasheed, who currently serves as Chairperson of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), shared his views on social media as public debate continues over the proposed initiative.
“In my perspective, the residency program will be immensely beneficial to the Maldives, representing a new and diversified avenue for tourism-related business opportunities,” Nasheed said.
His remarks come amid criticism from some quarters claiming that the programme could pose risks to the country’s sovereignty. However, Nasheed’s endorsement adds support from a prominent opposition figure, suggesting that the proposal also has the potential to deliver significant economic benefits.
The residency programme is intended to attract high-net-worth individuals and long-term international residents by offering a legal pathway to reside in the Maldives under specific conditions. Supporters argue that such programmes can stimulate investment, create employment opportunities, strengthen the real estate sector, and generate additional revenue while complementing the country’s tourism-based economy.
Several countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Portugal, Greece, and Thailand, have introduced residency schemes aimed at attracting foreign investment and skilled professionals. Proponents say similar initiatives have helped diversify economic activity beyond traditional tourism.
The Maldivian government has maintained that the proposed residency programme will operate within the country’s legal framework and that Maldivian sovereignty and national interests will remain fully protected.
