The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has issued a White Alert for central parts of the country, warning of heavy rain and thunderstorms expected on Sunday morning.
The alert covers the area from Noonu Atoll to Thaa Atoll and remains in effect from 7:15 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on 4 May 2026. Authorities caution that the period may see intense rainfall, lightning, and gusty winds, with potential disruptions to sea travel and outdoor activities.
The warning comes amid a week of unsettled weather conditions across the Maldives. Over the past several days, multiple regions have experienced frequent showers, strong winds, and thunderstorms, particularly across central and southern atolls. Weather patterns have remained unstable, with intermittent heavy rain and lightning reported in areas including Kaafu, Meemu, and Laamu atolls.
Meteorological observations indicate that this prolonged instability is linked to active cloud systems moving across the equatorial region, a common occurrence during seasonal transition periods. Such conditions often bring sudden downpours and localized thunderstorms across the island chain.
The MET Office continues to advise the public, especially seafarers, to remain cautious and monitor official updates as conditions may change rapidly.
