Government Vows Firm Action to Ensure Public Safety Amid Political Criticism

By The Standard Published December 1, 2024

The government remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all residents, according to Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan. The minister’s statement came in response to allegations made by Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, who claimed the government is taking action against individuals to protect the reputation of senior officials, including President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

In a social media post, Fayyaz suggested that the government is treating criticism as a criminal act, targeting those who express disapproval of its actions. He accused the administration of undermining freedom of expression.

Minister Ihusaan refuted these claims, asserting that Fayyaz’s remarks were directed at a specific individual in a manner that could incite harm. He stressed that it is the duty of relevant authorities to investigate such cases to uphold public safety.

The minister emphasized that while freedom of expression is a constitutional right, it must be exercised responsibly and within legal boundaries. “The government is committed to safeguarding the rights and security of all citizens,” Ihusaan stated, adding that politicizing every issue is both irresponsible and counterproductive.

This exchange highlights the growing tensions between the government and opposition as the administration seeks to balance security measures with the preservation of civil liberties.
