Male’ City Council Begins Redevelopment of Galolhu City Park

By The Standard Published December 8, 2024

After lying in disrepair for over 15 years, Galolhu City Park in Male’ City is finally undergoing redevelopment, the Male’ City Council has announced. The park, which had been closed off with tin sheets since its initial closure, had become a hub for illicit activities and a source of distress for local residents.

A Long-Delayed Revival

The Galolhu City Park was initially closed for redevelopment over a decade ago, but no progress had been made until now. The site, neglected for years, devolved into a hotspot for drug-related activities, prompting numerous complaints from residents in the surrounding area.

In response to these concerns, the Male’ City Council launched redevelopment efforts on December 6. By December 8, workers had removed the tin sheets enclosing the park and cleaned up the premises, laying the groundwork for significant improvements.

A Vision for Community-Centered Development

The redevelopment plan prioritizes creating a space that caters to a wide range of public needs. According to the City Council, the upgraded park will include:

  • A three-on-three basketball court
  • An outdoor badminton court
  • A running track
  • A children’s play area
  • An outdoor gym
  • Dedicated areas for events
  • A rest and socializing space for senior citizens

The Council emphasized that the redesign aims to create a safe and vibrant community space where residents of all ages can gather, exercise, and socialize.

A Broader Vision for Male’ City

Mayor Adam Azim has championed several initiatives to enhance Male’ City since taking office, with a focus on making the capital a more livable, peaceful, and inclusive environment. The redevelopment of Galolhu City Park is one of many projects aimed at achieving this vision.

The Council’s efforts to restore the park align with its broader goals of fostering community well-being and addressing longstanding public concerns. Residents can now look forward to a revitalized Galolhu City Park that serves as a cornerstone of community life in the district.
