The Elections Commission of Maldives has issued a formal warning to the People’s National Front (PNF), a party linked to former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, over repeated violations tied to its recent political gatherings.
In a statement released Monday, the Commission said it had received information that PNF has been conducting a series of activities that breach provisions of the Political Parties Act. Section 45(e) prohibits political parties from holding meetings in streets and public areas beyond what is permitted under other laws.
The Commission further noted that acts such as obstructing other parties’ meetings or attempting to hold simultaneous gatherings at the same location violate Sections 45(a) and 45(h) of the Act.
While the statement did not name any specific party, information obtained indicates that some of the disruptions have occurred near the headquarters of the People’s National Congress in the Artificial Beach area, where loudspeaker use and verbal abuse were allegedly employed to interfere with ongoing events.
The Commission stressed that all political activities must comply with the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act, which governs public assemblies in the Maldives.
PNF has been formally advised to cease such conduct and was invited for discussions with the Commission, but declined to attend. Authorities warned that any continuation of these activities would result in legal action under the Political Parties Act.
