Fisheries Ministry Opens Applications for Overseas Scholarships in Fisheries Studies

By The Standard Published December 9, 2024

The Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources, and Agriculture has announced the opening of applications for higher education scholarships in fisheries, offered under the World Bank’s “Transforming Fisheries Management in South West Indian Ocean Region and Maldives” initiative.

As part of the program, three scholarships are available for Maldivian students to pursue Bachelor’s degrees in fisheries-related fields at institutions in Asia. This includes two slots for fisheries science and one slot for aquaculture.

Comprehensive Coverage for Scholars
The scholarships will cover a range of expenses to ensure students can focus entirely on their studies. These include:

  • Monthly stipends for the course duration

Eligibility Requirements
To qualify, applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Achieve a minimum “C” grade in at least five O-Level subjects and three A-Level subjects, or
  • Hold a foundation or certificate-level qualification recognized for university entrance.

Application Process and Deadline
Interested individuals are required to submit their applications, along with all necessary supporting documents, to the Fisheries Ministry by 12:00 PM on January 9, 2025. Incomplete submissions will be disqualified.

Selected candidates will be required to sign a bond under Civil Service regulations, obliging them to work at the Fisheries Ministry for a specified period upon completing their studies.

This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to developing skilled professionals in the fisheries sector, a cornerstone of the Maldivian economy.
