Escalating gang violence in Malé leaves another individual injured

By Ahmed Ashraf Published January 25, 2025

An individual was hospitalized following a violent incident in Malé late last night. According to a statement released by the Maldives Police Service, the injured person was brought to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) around 11:40 PM. Authorities have yet to make any arrests related to this case, and details regarding the severity of the injuries remain undisclosed. The police have confirmed that an active investigation is underway.

This incident follows a similar event on January 15, when another individual was found injured near Senahiya Hospital in Malé. Since October, there has been a noticeable surge in gang-related conflicts within the capital, leading to a series of violent episodes.

The Maldives has been grappling with gang violence for several years. A 2012 report by the Asia Foundation and the Maldives Institute for Psychological Services highlighted the increasing prevalence and brutality of gang-related incidents, noting the existence of numerous gangs operating within Malé, each comprising between 50 to 400 members.

In response to the escalating violence, the Maldives Police Service announced plans to establish a specialized ‘Drug and Violent Crime Command’ to intensify efforts against drug-related offenses and violent crimes.
