Rain and Thunder Ahead: Maldives Weather Turns Rough in the South and Central Regions

By Ahmed Ashraf Published April 4, 2025

The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has issued a stark warning: residents of the southern and central atolls should prepare for deteriorating weather conditions today. In contrast, the northern atolls are expected to enjoy relatively calm and pleasant weather.

According to the MET Office, various parts of the southern atolls will experience rainfall, with some islands likely facing heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms. In anticipation of these adverse conditions, a white alert was issued last night for the region spanning from Laamu Atoll to Addu City. This alert remained in effect until 6:30 this morning.

Mariners and those planning sea travel should exercise heightened caution. The MET Office forecasts moderately calm seas, with winds blowing at speeds between 5 and 15 miles per hour. In the southern atolls, winds will originate from the south and southwest, while in other areas, they will come from the north and northeast. Wave heights are projected to range between 1 and 4 feet.

Given the expected inclement weather, the Maldives Meteorological Service urges all residents, particularly seafarers, to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure safety during this period of unsettled weather.
