Police Stand Firm to Protect Order Amid Majeedhee Magu Chaos

By Ahmed Ashraf Published May 2, 2025

In a decisive move to uphold public order and ensure the well-being of citizens, the Maldives Police Service (MPS) intervened in a series of unauthorized demonstrations on Majeedhee Magu, the bustling artery of Malé. The actions were taken in response to mounting public concerns over disruptions caused by the protests, which included obstruction of traffic, interference with emergency services, and disturbances to local businesses and residents.

Balancing Rights and Responsibilities

The MPS reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the constitutional right to peaceful assembly, as enshrined in Article 32 of the Maldives Constitution. However, the service emphasized that this right must be exercised responsibly and within the framework of the law. Under the Peaceful Assembly Act (Law No. 1/2013 and its Amendment Law No. 20/2016), assemblies in Malé are permitted only in designated areas unless prior written permission is obtained from the police.

Addressing Public Concerns

The recent demonstrations, while highlighting important societal issues, have led to significant public inconvenience. Residents reported excessive noise levels disrupting students preparing for crucial examinations, and local businesses faced operational challenges due to blocked access. The MPS received numerous complaints regarding these disturbances, prompting a measured response to restore normalcy.

Ensuring Public Safety

In line with their mandate to maintain public order, police officers issued multiple advisories to the demonstrators, urging them to relocate to designated protest areas. Despite these efforts, the protests continued to impede daily life in the capital. Consequently, the MPS took lawful measures to disperse the gatherings, ensuring the safety and rights of all citizens were upheld.

Commitment to Lawful Demonstrations

The Maldives Police Service remains steadfast in its dedication to facilitating peaceful and lawful demonstrations. The service urges all citizens to exercise their rights responsibly, respecting the laws designed to protect both individual freedoms and the collective well-being of the community.
