President Muizzu Reaffirms Sole Accountability to the People

By Ahmed Ashraf Published April 27, 2025

In a resolute affirmation of his leadership, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has declared his sole accountability to the Maldivian people in ensuring justice, amidst escalating public demands for transparency and reform.

Speaking at Velana International Airport prior to his departure for an official visit to Malaysia, President Muizzu emphasized his administration’s unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law. “Justice will be maintained under all circumstances,” he asserted, highlighting that no individual, regardless of status, is exempt from accountability.

The President’s remarks come in the wake of sustained youth-led protests in Malé, sparked by the tragic incident involving 21-year-old Hawwa Yumnu Rasheed. Discovered severely injured on April 18, Yumnu’s case has galvanized public outcry over alleged police negligence and perceived protection of influential individuals. Protesters have issued a list of demands, including the resignation of key officials and an independent investigation into the incident.

Responding to these concerns, President Muizzu announced the formation of a special commission to investigate the matter, working in tandem with the Maldives Police Service. He assured that necessary enforcement actions would be taken swiftly, reinforcing his administration’s dedication to justice.

In a significant development, Police Commissioner Ali Shujau tendered his resignation following the protests, one of the key demands of the demonstrators. Deputy Commissioner Ismail Naveen has been appointed as acting police chief.

President Muizzu also called upon the Maldives Police Service to ensure transparent and timely dissemination of information, underscoring the importance of open communication in fostering public trust.

As he embarks on his official visit to Malaysia, President Muizzu is set to engage in discussions aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation, with a focus on trade, education, and tourism. He is also scheduled to deliver a lecture at the International Islamic University of Malaysia and meet with the Maldivian community residing there.

Despite the international engagements, domestic pressures remain high. Maldivian students in Malaysia have reportedly declined invitations to meet with the President, reflecting the ongoing discontent among the diaspora.

President Muizzu’s reaffirmation of his commitment to justice and accountability signals a pivotal moment in his administration, as the nation watches closely for substantive actions addressing the public’s demands.
