Kaashidhoo Powers Up: STELCO Boosts Island’s Electricity Capacity with New Generator

By Ahmed Ashraf Published May 8, 2025

In a significant move to enhance energy reliability, the State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has deployed a 500-kilowatt generator to Kaashidhoo Island, elevating the island’s total electricity generation capacity to 2,562 kilowatts. This upgrade is part of STELCO’s broader initiative to strengthen power infrastructure across the Maldives.

The newly installed generator has been commissioned and is now operational, ensuring a more robust and consistent electricity supply for Kaashidhoo residents. This enhancement addresses the growing energy demands of the community and supports local development.

STELCO’s efforts in Kaashidhoo are reflective of its nationwide strategy to modernize and expand energy services. In recent years, the company has introduced multiple generator sets to various islands, including a 600-kilowatt unit in Thoddoo and a 500-kilowatt unit in Dhigurah, significantly boosting their respective power capacities .

Beyond generator installations, STELCO is actively pursuing renewable energy solutions. The company has implemented solar power systems and battery storage projects in several islands, aiming to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and promote sustainable energy practices .

These initiatives align with the Maldivian government’s commitment to achieving 33% renewable energy in electricity consumption by 2028, as outlined in the national energy roadmap . STELCO’s ongoing projects are pivotal in steering the country towards a more sustainable and energy-secure future.

As the Maldives continues to navigate the challenges of energy demand and environmental sustainability, STELCO’s proactive measures in Kaashidhoo and beyond exemplify the nation’s dedication to progress and resilience.
