FIBA U16 Qualifiers Tip Off in Malé with Dhiraagu as Proud Sponsor

By Ahmed Ashraf Published June 12, 2025

The Maldives opened a landmark sporting event today as they host the FIBA U16 Asia Cup SABA Qualifiers and the U16 Women’s SABA Qualifiers, sponsored by Dhiraagu, at the Social Centre Indoor Court.

From today through 16 June, four South Asian national teams—Maldives, India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh—will compete for a place in the prestigious FIBA U16 Asia Cup. It marks the first time the Maldives Basketball Association (MBA) has hosted a FIBA-sanctioned under‑16 international tournament, a major milestone in the nation’s youth sports program .

The opening day delivers home-court excitement: Maldives’ women’s U16 squad clashes with Bangladesh at 5:30 PM, followed by the men’s U16 facing Sri Lanka at 8:00 PM. Both matchups promise high-intensity action as Maldivian teams strive to spark inspiration in local fans.

Dhiraagu has backed basketball development in the Maldives for years. The telecommunications giant became the official digital partner of the MBA in 2022, underwriting grassroots initiatives, youth programs, referee training, and national-level development .

In honor of today’s landmark tip-off, Dhiraagu hosted a special jersey handover ceremony featuring Abdulla Rafiu. The event, livestreamed via social media, highlighted the company’s ongoing commitment to youth and sport .

With Dhiraagu’s support and the MBA’s growing infrastructure, basketball’s popularity is rising across the archipelago. The U16 qualifiers represent more than just competition—they symbolize the Maldives’ arrival on Asia’s junior basketball stage.

What’s at Stake

Qualification: The winners will earn a coveted slot at the FIBA U16 Asia Cup.

Legacy: The Maldives cements its reputation as a capable host of international events.

Development: Exposure at this level supports the growth of youth sports nationwide.

Looking Ahead

The tournament continues through Monday, 16 June, showcasing multiple days of intense regional basketball. Local supporters are encouraged to fill the Social Centre Court. Matches are expected to be broadcast on local platforms and shared online.
