As thousands of people continue traveling across the Maldives ahead of Eid celebrations, authorities have urged the public to exercise caution due to worsening weather conditions affecting the northern and central regions of the country.
According to the Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office), rainy conditions and thunderstorms are expected to continue across several northern and central atolls throughout today.
The agency also warned that heavy rainfall could affect some islands in the northern region, while weather conditions in the south are expected to remain comparatively calmer.
Statistics released by the Met Office showed that ADh. Maamigili recorded the highest rainfall over the past 24 hours with 36 millimeters of rain, followed closely by HDh. Hanimaadhoo, which recorded 35.3 millimeters.
Forecasters stated that winds in the northern and central atolls are expected to blow from the southwest and west at speeds ranging between 13 and 23 miles per hour.
Meanwhile, winds in the southern atolls are forecast to range between 5 and 15 miles per hour.
The Met Office further warned that wind gusts during squalls could reach up to 40 miles per hour.
Sea conditions are also expected to remain rough across the northern and central regions, while southern seas are predicted to remain moderately calm.
Wave heights in the southern region are expected to range between two and four feet, while seas in the north and central Maldives could see wave heights between four and seven feet.
Authorities noted that the country is currently experiencing the peak period of the Southwest Monsoon season, locally known as Hulhangu, which is traditionally associated with rough seas, heavy rain and strong winds.
The Met Office has appealed to travelers, particularly those commuting by sea during the Eid holiday period, to closely monitor weather forecasts and official alerts before traveling.
The Maldives Police Service has also advised motorists and travelers to remain vigilant and follow safety precautions due to the deteriorating weather conditions.
Authorities stated that all relevant agencies remain on alert to minimize potential accidents and damages during the ongoing bad weather.
