Fenaka Corporation has begun installing a new 1,200 kW generator set in Sh. Milandhoo, in a major upgrade aimed at strengthening the island’s electricity generation capacity and improving the reliability of power services.
The newly delivered unit is the largest-capacity generator to be brought to Milandhoo to date, according to information released by Fenaka.
Before the latest addition, the Milandhoo powerhouse had a total generation capacity of 2,100 kW. Once installation and commissioning of the new generator are completed, the island’s overall available generation capacity is expected to increase to 2,700 kW.
Fenaka said the additional capacity would help address the island’s everyday electricity requirements and contribute towards a more stable and uninterrupted power supply for residents.
The upgrade will also provide the powerhouse with greater flexibility in managing electricity demand, particularly during periods of higher consumption. Maintaining sufficient generation capacity is important for island power systems, as it allows individual generator units to undergo maintenance or repairs while reducing the risk of disruptions to customers.
Installation works are now underway, with the new unit expected to be integrated into the Milandhoo power system following the necessary technical and commissioning procedures.
The Milandhoo project is among a series of generation capacity upgrades Fenaka has been carrying out across islands under its electricity network.
In recent days, the state-owned utility has also delivered new high-capacity generator sets to HA. Hoarafushi and HDh. Hanimaadhoo, as part of efforts to strengthen existing powerhouses and address electricity demand in island communities.
Fenaka provides electricity services to a large number of inhabited islands across the Maldives, alongside water and sewerage services in several communities. As most islands operate independent electricity grids, sufficient generation and reserve capacity at individual powerhouses remains important for maintaining reliable services.
Once operational, the new Milandhoo generator is expected to strengthen the powerhouse’s ability to meet current demand while providing additional capacity to support the island’s electricity requirements.
