The Finnish technical diving team assisting in the Vaavu Atoll cave recovery operation has handed over GoPro cameras and several pieces of diving equipment recovered from inside the underwater cave system to investigators from the Maldives Police Service as part of the ongoing investigation into the fatal diving incident.
Sources involved in the operation confirmed to The Standard that the equipment was retrieved during the high-risk recovery mission conducted deep inside the cave network where four Italian divers were found.
Investigators believe the recovered items could provide critical evidence in reconstructing the divers’ final moments inside the cave, including their underwater route, diving depth, visibility conditions, and any technical difficulties encountered during the expedition.
The GoPro footage, if recoverable, is expected to play a key role in helping authorities determine the sequence of events leading up to the tragedy.
The Finnish cave diving specialists have been working alongside Maldivian authorities and international experts during the technically demanding recovery operation in Vaavu Atoll, which has drawn international attention due to the complexity and danger of the cave environment.
Police investigations into the incident remain ongoing as recovery teams continue efforts to retrieve the remaining divers from the cave system.
