Government Expands Benefits, Fishermen to Receive Ramadan Allowances

By Hussain Shinan Published February 25, 2025

In a move to support the country’s vital fishing sector, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced on Monday night that Maldivian fishermen will soon receive Ramadan allowances. The decision comes as part of the government’s broader effort to provide financial support to key sectors of the economy during the holy month of Ramadan.

The announcement was made during the President’s ongoing visit to Dhaalu Atoll, where he addressed residents of Dhaalu Meedhoo. Speaking to the community, President Muizzu emphasized that providing Ramadan allowances to fishermen is a top priority for his administration, with preparations already underway to implement the initiative.

In his address, the President revealed that a registry of fishermen has been compiled, laying the foundation for an efficient distribution system to ensure that the allowances reach those who need it most. He assured the public that steps have been taken to make the process smooth and timely, allowing fishermen to benefit from the allowance before the start of Ramadan.

This initiative is part of a broader effort by the government to ensure that financial support is extended to various sectors, especially those that play a crucial role in the economy, such as the fishing industry. The allowance will provide financial relief to fishermen who work tirelessly to sustain the country’s fishing industry, ensuring that they have the support they need during the month of fasting.

The announcement follows the government’s successful implementation of Ramadan allowances for Women’s Development Committee (WDC) members. This is seen as a fulfillment of a key presidential pledge, with legal amendments already ratified and instructions given for councils to transfer the allowances before the end of this week.

As the government continues to expand its financial support programs for key sectors, President Muizzu’s initiative for fishermen is a testament to his administration’s commitment to strengthening the livelihoods of those who form the backbone of the Maldivian economy. The allowances are expected to provide significant relief to the country’s fishermen during the holy month of Ramadan.
