‘Guided by Global Expertise, Driven by National Vision’ – Minister Ihusaan on Maldives 2.0

By Ahmed Ashraf Published May 10, 2025

At the inauguration of the Maldives 2.0 Digital Transformation Summit, Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan, emphasized the government’s commitment to a comprehensive digital overhaul aimed at enhancing transparency and efficiency across all state institutions.

Held at the Barceló Nasandhura in Malé, the summit marked the official launch of the Maldives 2.0 initiative, a policy designed to integrate all branches of government into a unified digital framework. Minister Ihusaan highlighted that the presence of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef, Speaker of the People’s Majlis Abdul Raheem Abdulla, and Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan underscored the administration’s dedication to this transformative agenda.

“Maldives 2.0 is not just a policy; it’s a national movement towards a digitally empowered society,” Minister Ihusaan stated. He noted that the initiative was formulated with insights from global digital leaders, including Estonia, and with contributions from local experts.

The two-day summit will involve extensive discussions among government agencies and ministries to outline the roadmap for the nation’s digital transformation. Agreements reached during the summit will set the stage for the practical implementation of the digitalization policy under the guidance of the Maldives Digital Transformation Council.

Minister Ihusaan extended gratitude to the technical staff of the Ministry of Home Affairs and National Security, NCIT, and TradeNet for their efforts in developing the policy. He also acknowledged the support of Estonian experts, particularly Mr. Linnar Viik, Member of the Digital Council to the President of Estonia and Co-founder of the eGovernance Academy, for their valuable insights and consultations.

“Your expertise will help us move forward more effectively in our digitalization journey,” Minister Ihusaan remarked, expressing appreciation for the long hours of consultation provided by the Estonian team.

The Maldives 2.0 initiative aims to bring revolutionary changes to the country’s digital landscape, with the goal of enhancing service delivery and fostering a more transparent and efficient government.

As the summit progresses, the nation looks forward to the successful implementation of this ambitious digital transformation agenda.
