India’s PM Modi Visiting Maldives This Week as State Guest of President Muizzu

By Ahmed Ashraf Published July 20, 2025

In a historic diplomatic milestone, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu will host Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on a state visit to the Maldives from July 25 to 26, 2025. This is Modi’s first visit to the Maldives since beginning his third term, and it comes at the special invitation of President Muizzu—underscoring his administration’s firm commitment to strengthening regional partnerships while upholding Maldivian sovereignty and national interest.

The visit takes place during the 60th anniversary of the Maldives’ independence and 60 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations with India. It marks a powerful symbol of enduring friendship and mutual respect between the two neighbours, facilitated through President Muizzu’s pragmatic foreign policy approach.

During the visit, President Muizzu and Prime Minister Modi will hold high-level talks on key bilateral and regional issues, followed by the inauguration of several major joint development projects. A number of Memoranda of Understanding are also expected to be signed, covering areas such as economic cooperation, digital connectivity, infrastructure, and maritime safety—core priorities of the Muizzu administration’s development agenda.

President Muizzu’s statesmanship in orchestrating this visit amid a dynamic regional environment reflects his strategic vision to maintain balanced international relations while advancing national prosperity. His diplomatic efforts have ensured that Maldives continues to attract support and collaboration from global partners without compromising on autonomy or national pride.

Prime Minister Modi will also attend the official Independence Day ceremony on July 26 as the Chief Guest—further validating the strength of Maldives’ leadership on the global stage under Dr Muizzu. The presence of the Indian leader at this national celebration serves as a testament to President Muizzu’s success in securing international recognition and respect during a pivotal year in the country’s history.

This high-level visit is widely seen as a reflection of renewed confidence in President Muizzu’s leadership and his ability to manage external relations with clarity, dignity, and a firm focus on the Maldives’ long-term national interests. As the nation prepares to celebrate six decades of independence, President Muizzu is proving to be a unifying figure capable of steering the Maldives towards diplomatic strength and sustainable progress.
