Maldives has issued a strong diplomatic warning at the Organisation of the Islamic Cooperation over Israel’s decision to recognise Somaliland as an independent state, describing the move as a direct threat to international law and the sovereignty of small nations.

The message was delivered by Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, who represented the Maldives at the 22nd Extraordinary Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organisation of the Islamic Cooperation held in Jeddah.
Addressing ministers from across the Islamic world, Dr. Khaleel expressed grave concern over Israel’s decision, stating that recognising Somaliland constitutes a clear violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Somalia and runs contrary to the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter. He warned that such actions erode established international norms that safeguard statehood and territorial integrity.
Placing the issue in a wider geopolitical context, the Foreign Minister noted that the decision comes amid heightened regional instability, particularly the ongoing crisis in Gaza. He criticised Israel’s conduct during the current ceasefire, stressing that continued disregard for international law weakens the global rules based order.
Dr. Khaleel cautioned that undermining international legal frameworks sets a dangerous precedent for small states like Maldives, which depend on international law to protect their sovereignty, independence, and security in an increasingly volatile world.
The OIC, comprising 57 member states, has long positioned itself as a leading advocate for the Palestinian cause and a collective voice on issues affecting the Muslim Ummah. Maldives has remained an active and principled member of the organisation since joining in 1976, consistently aligning its foreign policy with the defence of international law and justice on the global stage.
