In a bold move to revolutionize governance, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has launched the ‘Maldives 2.0′ initiative, aiming to eliminate corruption by embracing comprehensive digitalization. Speaking at the inaugural session of the Maldives 2.0 Transformation Summit held at Barceló Nasandhura Malé, President Muizzu emphasized that digitalization is central to his administration’s strategy for fostering transparency and accountability.
“Our goal is to create a transparent system where every government activity and communication is circulated through a single network,” President Muizzu stated. He highlighted that automating and digitalizing public services would significantly reduce opportunities for abuse of power and improve access to information. A unified digital network is envisioned to interconnect all government bodies, service providers, and private sector institutions.
The President expressed gratitude to the government of Estonia for its support and collaboration, noting that Estonia’s successful digital transformation serves as a model for the Maldives. A team of Estonian experts, including pioneers of Estonia’s digitalization efforts, participated in the summit, sharing insights and expertise.
President Muizzu announced that the Maldives aims to achieve in four years what Estonia accomplished in twenty-five, with Estonian authorities expressing confidence in the feasibility of this target based on their own experience. He also revealed that a draft of the necessary legislation to support this initiative is currently being prepared.
Looking ahead, the President projected that by 2030, 15 percent of the Maldives’ production would stem from the digital economy, further strengthening national resilience and governance integrity.
The ‘Maldives 2.0’ initiative represents a cornerstone of the administration’s broader reform agenda, with long-term implications for anti-corruption efforts, economic growth, and digital equity.
The summit was attended by the Vice President, Speaker of Parliament, Chief Justice, members of the cabinet, senior state officials, and expert representatives from the Estonian government, marking a significant step towards a digitally empowered Maldives.
