In a powerful display of regional solidarity, Maldives Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel reaffirmed the nation’s unwavering support for India in its battle against terrorism. During the second India-Maldives High-Level Core Group (HLCG) meeting held in New Delhi on May 26, 2025, Dr. Khaleel condemned the heinous terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives and injured numerous others on April 22.
“The Maldives stands in full solidarity with the people and government of India,” Dr. Khaleel stated, emphasizing the country’s firm stance against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.
The HLCG meeting, co-chaired by Dr. Khaleel and India’s Additional Secretary for the Indian Ocean Region, Puneet Agrawal, focused on the implementation of the India-Maldives Vision Document on Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership. This strategic framework, adopted during Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to India in October 2024, aims to enhance bilateral cooperation in areas such as defense, security, trade, health, and people-to-people exchanges.
Dr. Khaleel’s visit marks his third trip to India in 2025, underscoring the deepening ties between the two nations. In his discussions with India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, both leaders explored avenues to expedite the implementation of the Vision Document and strengthen the multifaceted relationship between the Maldives and India.
Expressing gratitude for India’s timely emergency financial assistance, Dr. Khaleel acknowledged the positive impact of the support on the daily lives of Maldivians. “India remains committed to the progress and development of the Maldives,” Dr. Jaishankar affirmed, highlighting the enduring partnership between the two countries.
The HLCG meeting also set the stage for the next round of discussions, with both sides agreeing to convene the third meeting in Malé at a mutually convenient date. This ongoing dialogue reflects the shared commitment of the Maldives and India to regional stability, security, and prosperity.
As the Maldives continues to stand firmly with India against terrorism, the bond between the two nations serves as a beacon of cooperation and mutual respect in the Indian Ocean region.
