In preparation for the upcoming month of Ramadan, the Ministry of Islamic Affairs is calling on local Hafiz to step forward and lead Tarawih prayers, along with participating in Hifz, or Quran memorization. This initiative is part of the government’s broader effort to enhance religious participation during the holy month.
Interested candidates can obtain application forms and required documentation from local council offices or download them from the ministry’s official website at www.islamicaffairs.gov.mv.
Hafiz selected to lead Tarawih prayers in mosques will receive a nightly allowance of MVR 500, with up to two Hafiz appointed per mosque. Additionally, the ministry is looking for local Hafiz to lead prayers at the Islamic Center and Salman Mosque in Male’. Those chosen for these prominent positions will receive an enhanced allowance of MVR 700 per night.
To further support these efforts, the Ministry of Islamic Affairs has also introduced a Khatib Training Programme aimed at equipping participants with essential skills to deliver sermons (khutbah) and lead prayers. This program is open not only to school graduates but also to students in Grades 10, 11, and 12, encouraging youth involvement in religious leadership.
In a notable move to engage younger generations in leadership roles, the ministry has granted permission to 270 children under 18 to deliver sermons and lead Friday prayers.
The government has set an ambitious goal of training 1,000 khatibs throughout its term, emphasizing the importance of fostering religious leadership at the community level during this sacred time.
