The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has issued a Yellow Alert covering the region from Haa Alifu Atoll to Meemu Atoll, warning of heavy rain, strong winds, and rough seas as the southwest monsoon intensifies across the country.
The Yellow Alert is in effect from 7:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. on Friday, 31 July, covering the area from Haa Alifu Atoll to Meemu Atoll.
According to the MET Office, the affected region is expected to experience heavy rainfall, sustained winds of 25 to 30 mph, and wind gusts reaching up to 50 mph during squalls. Sea conditions are also forecast to become rough.
In a separate weather briefing issued on Thursday evening, the MET Office said the southwest monsoon has become active over the Maldives, with a low pressure trough extending across the northern and southeastern parts of the country. This weather pattern is expected to generate intense convection west of the Maldives, leading to worsening weather conditions nationwide, particularly on Friday.
The weather agency has advised the public, especially seafarers, to closely monitor the latest forecasts and warnings and to take the necessary precautions before travelling or heading out to sea.
Weather conditions are expected to remain unsettled across several parts of the country as the active southwest monsoon continues to influence the Maldives.
