Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been contracted to develop a new dinghy jetty and carry out coastal protection works in Villingili, with both projects scheduled to be completed within six months.
The Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure announced that separate agreements for the two projects were signed with MTCC on Monday.
State Minister Ismail Hameed signed the agreements on behalf of the ministry, while MTCC Managing Director Ahmed Saudy signed on behalf of the state-owned contractor.
Under the first project, a new dinghy jetty will be developed on the northern side of Villingili. MTCC has been given five months to complete the works.
The project will involve dredging 3,698 cubic metres from the harbour basin and channel, alongside the construction of a 74-metre quay wall equipped with a ramp and stairs.
MTCC will also construct a 24-metre rock boulder breakwater and install a three-metre rock boulder revetment. A 74-metre-long, two-metre-wide concrete jetty will also be developed as part of the project.
The second agreement focuses on coastal protection works at several locations around Villingili and carries a six-month completion period.
As part of the project, beach nourishment will be undertaken across an area of approximately 1.1 hectares.
The coastal protection infrastructure will include a 150-metre rock boulder revetment and a 181-metre submerged rock boulder breakwater. MTCC will also remove a 60-metre section of an existing breakwater.
The latest projects form part of ongoing government efforts to improve harbour and coastal infrastructure across the country, particularly in communities facing erosion and requiring safer access for smaller vessels.
