President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s administration has reached another milestone in the Boduthakurufaanu Magu Development Project, with asphalt paving completed on the stretch from the Henveiru Ferry Terminal to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The paving of segments four and five under the project’s first phase began overnight and was completed on Wednesday morning, marking further progress on one of Malé’s most significant road infrastructure projects.
According to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), asphalt paving on the remaining section between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Official Jetty is scheduled to begin next week. The road will remain closed to the public until all paving works are completed.
The first phase of the project covers five segments extending from the Official Jetty to the Henveiru Ferry Terminal. Earlier phases have already seen the section from Izzudheen Magu to the Henveiru Ferry Terminal upgraded with asphalt, allowing traffic to move more smoothly through those areas.
The redevelopment also includes the reconstruction of the quay wall to widen the road, along with the installation of a modern integrated drainage system designed to improve flood resilience and the long-term durability of the roadway.
The Boduthakurufaanu Magu Development Project is one of the government’s flagship transport initiatives, aimed at providing a lasting solution to traffic congestion in Malé while modernising one of the capital’s busiest corridors.
Although the project was originally targeted for completion in June, MTCC now expects all works to be finished by July 26, following construction delays.
Previous completed segments have already received positive feedback from motorists and commuters, with many noting smoother traffic flow, improved driving conditions and a noticeable reduction in bottlenecks along the upgraded sections. Once the remaining works are completed, the entire stretch from the Henveiru Ferry Terminal to the Malé North Harbour will feature a fully asphalted, widened roadway supported by upgraded drainage and coastal infrastructure, significantly enhancing connectivity along Malé’s northern waterfront.
