Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has announced that 68 percent of the sheet piling work under the first phase of the Boduthakurufaanu Magu redevelopment project has now been completed.
The large-scale project, aimed at upgrading one of Malé’s busiest roads to modern standards, officially began on August 22, 2025.
According to MTCC, ongoing works currently focus on segments 2, 3 and 4 of the project, where wall capping activities have now commenced. The company noted that wall capping has already been completed across a 100-meter section.
MTCC explained that the concrete pouring work for the quay wall capping represents a key stage in preparing the area for pavement construction and further road development.

In addition to the sheet piling work, crews are simultaneously carrying out several major infrastructure activities, including sewerage works, installation of main water and sewer pipes, stormwater catchpits, manholes, anchor blocks and quay wall panels.

The redevelopment project also includes road widening, asphalt paving, pedestrian pathways and a new stormwater drainage network.
The first stage of the project focused on reclaiming a portion of the lagoon area near Republic Square between the Local Market and the Presidential Jetty to widen the road into four lanes. That section was completed and opened to the public last December.
Earlier this year, MTCC also completed and opened the second segment of the project covering the southern side of Boduthakurufaanu Magu between the Presidential Jetty and the Fish Market.
Under the overall redevelopment plan, an 830-meter stretch of roadway will be upgraded, including sheet piling across 737 meters.
Funded through the state budget at a cost of 144 million Rufiyaa, the project is expected to be fully completed by July this year, according to MTCC.
