Nasheed’s Grip on Power Weakens: Loyal Strongmen Defect to MDP, Signaling His Political Demise

By Ahmed Ashraf Published January 11, 2025

In a significant political development, Al-Usthaaz Hassan Latheef, known as Hassanko, has stepped down from his role as president of The Democrats, a party founded by former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed. Alongside Hassan Latheef, Mohamed Shifaz, also known as Shippe, has resigned from his position as vice president.

Hassan Latheef confirmed his resignation to the media, stating that his decision to leave the presidency was driven by a belief that it was the most appropriate step at this juncture. Meanwhile, Shifaz announced his resignation on Saturday afternoon, citing a desire to engage more broadly in political activities beyond the confines of his party role.

Amidst speculation regarding Shifaz’s future political affiliations, particularly rumors of his potential alignment with the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), he clarified that he has yet to officially join the MDP.

Insider information suggests that several other prominent members of The Democrats are considering a move to the MDP. Among them are former Member of Parliament Ali Azim and Ibrahim Rasheed (Maamigili Ibu), who previously managed Greater Male’ Industrial Zone Limited under the former administration. Additionally, Hussain Amru, who once served as the first Managing Director of STO under the MDP-led government and was The Democrats’ vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has reportedly already transitioned to the MDP.

The Democrats emerged in 2023 from a faction within the MDP loyal to Nasheed. This group favored a parliamentary system of governance, leading to internal divisions and eventually the formation of their own party. These recent resignations and shifts highlight perceived vulnerabilities in Nasheed’s political influence and raise questions about the future stability and direction of The Democrats amid changing allegiances within Maldivian politics.
