New deputy speaker expected to be elected in Majlis today

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 8 hours ago

The People’s Majlis is scheduled to convene at 1:00 PM today, with lawmakers expected to elect a new Deputy Speaker following the resignation of Ahmed Nazim from the post earlier this morning.

The additional sitting was announced by Speaker of Parliament after Nazim’s resignation was formally presented to the chamber during the morning session.

Nazim stepped down shortly before a no-confidence motion seeking his removal was due to be debated in the 9:00 AM sitting. The motion had been submitted by the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC), which holds a supermajority in Parliament.

Following the announcement of the resignation, the morning session was adjourned as there were no other items remaining on the agenda.

Although the official agenda for the 1:00 PM sitting was not immediately disclosed, members of the PNC parliamentary group said lawmakers are expected to convene primarily to elect a new Deputy Speaker to fill the vacancy created by Nazim’s departure.

The election is expected to draw significant attention given the ruling party’s commanding majority in the legislature, which places it in a strong position to determine the outcome of the vote.

Today’s sitting also coincides with the conclusion of the current parliamentary term. While the Majlis standing orders stipulate that the first term of the year should have ended on the 14th of this month, lawmakers extended the term until the end of today.
