Newborn Found Dead in Staff Quarters at Cinnamon Velifushi Resort, Woman Arrested

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 3 hours ago

A 27-year-old Maldivian woman has been arrested after a newborn infant was found dead inside a rubbish bin at a resort in Vaavu Atoll, police confirmed on Tuesday.

The incident occurred at the female staff accommodation block of Cinnamon Velifushi Resort, where the woman was employed. According to information released by Maldives Police Service, officers received a report at approximately 10.06 am regarding a suspected stillbirth involving a Maldivian national working at a resort in the atoll.

The deceased infant was discovered during an inspection of the accommodation block after staff reported a strong foul odour in the area. Upon inspection, the baby was found inside a dustbin and was already deceased. Social media reports have claimed that the infant weighed around two kilograms, though authorities have not officially confirmed this detail.

Police stated that preliminary information indicates the woman experienced a stillbirth, resulting in the death of the child. However, the circumstances surrounding the birth and the disposal of the infant are now under active investigation.

Authorities have confirmed that the woman, who reportedly worked in the resort’s front office, has been taken into custody in connection with the case. No further details have been disclosed at this stage, citing the ongoing investigation.

Police said updates will be provided as inquiries progress.
