Attorney General Uz Ahmed Usham has fiercely denied accusations of meddling with the judiciary, turning the tables on those who leveled the claims and describing them as politically driven and factually groundless.
Speaking at the “Aha Forum” on Tuesday, AG Usham categorically dismissed rumors circulating online and in political circles that alleged he or the current administration attempted to influence Supreme Court justices. He called the claims false, asserting that there had been no interference—direct or indirect—by the executive in the affairs of the judiciary.
The accusations were notably championed by former Supreme Court Justice Husnu Al Suood, who suggested a pattern of interference from senior officials. In a bold rebuttal, AG Usham accused Suood of engaging in political maneuvering since the beginning of the current administration’s term. He alleged that Suood had actively tried to influence President Dr Mohamed Muizzu behind closed doors, holding private meetings and applying pressure for political gain.
“If there is ever a formal investigation into these allegations, I will take full responsibility,” Usham declared, standing firmly by his statements and vowing transparency should an inquiry be initiated.
The Attorney General also responded to separate claims from Supreme Court Justice Dr Azmiralda Zahir, who alleged that Usham had attempted to issue threats via a third party. Dismissing this as a gross misrepresentation, Usham clarified that the conversation referenced by Dr Azmiralda was a casual exchange with a personal acquaintance, made months before any related court hearings were scheduled.
He further pointed out that both Suood and Azmiralda had already sat on two hearings of the case in question—without raising any objections or concerns at the time. Usham questioned why these allegations were only surfacing now, implying a connection to internal disciplinary actions currently unfolding within the judiciary.
“These claims aren’t just misleading—they appear calculated to undermine public trust at a time when accountability measures are being explored within the court,” Usham said.
As tensions grow between former and current members of the judiciary, the Attorney General’s sharp counteraccusations suggest the administration is prepared to push back hard against what it describes as political narratives aimed at destabilising the system from within.
