PM Modi Set to Visit Saudi Arabia, Rekindles Strategic Ties to Boost India-Europe Corridor

By Ahmed Ashraf Published April 5, 2025

In a significant diplomatic development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is anticipated to visit Saudi Arabia later this month, marking his first trip to the Kingdom since 2019. This visit underscores India’s commitment to bolstering its strategic partnerships in the Middle East and advancing the ambitious India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC).

During his stay, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to engage in high-level discussions with Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman. These talks aim to reinforce bilateral relations and explore avenues for enhanced cooperation across various sectors.

The backdrop of this visit is the IMEC initiative, unveiled during the G20 Summit in New Delhi in September 2023. This transformative project seeks to establish a comprehensive transportation network, integrating rail, road, and maritime routes to facilitate seamless connectivity between India, the Middle East, and Europe. Saudi Arabia’s pivotal position in this corridor highlights its role as a central hub linking the Arabian Gulf to European markets.

The proposed corridor envisions a rail network traversing Saudi Arabia, connecting ports in the UAE, such as Fujairah, to the Israeli port of Haifa, passing through key Saudi cities like Haradh and Riyadh. This infrastructure is poised to revolutionize trade dynamics by reducing transit times, cutting costs, and enhancing the efficiency of goods movement across continents.

For India, the IMEC represents a strategic endeavor to diversify trade routes, strengthen economic ties with the Gulf and European nations, and position itself as a key player in global supply chains. By fostering greater connectivity, India aims to tap into new markets, promote regional stability, and counterbalance other emerging economic corridors.

Saudi Arabia’s involvement in the IMEC aligns with its Vision 2030 objectives, aiming to diversify its economy beyond oil and establish itself as a global logistics and transportation hub. Collaborating with India on this corridor not only enhances bilateral relations but also contributes to broader regional economic integration.

Prime Minister Modi’s forthcoming visit is expected to solidify commitments, address logistical considerations, and set the stage for accelerated implementation of the IMEC. As both nations navigate the complexities of this ambitious project, their partnership is poised to usher in a new era of economic cooperation and connectivity, benefiting not only the participating countries but also the broader international community.

This strategic engagement reflects India’s proactive diplomacy and its vision for a more interconnected and prosperous global economy.
