Police Arrest Six Over Alleged Plan to Launch Knife Attacks in Malé

By Hussain Shinan Published 4 hours ago

Six Maldivian men have been arrested on suspicion of planning violent assaults involving sharp-edged weapons in Malé and Hulhumalé, the Maldives Police Service said.

The arrests followed a police operation carried out on the night of July 2, during which officers searched a guesthouse on Raiveri Hingun road and the surrounding area under a court-issued warrant.

According to police, all six suspects are Maldivian nationals. Those arrested include two 30-year-old men, a 34-year-old man, a 32-year-old man, a 23-year-old man and a 21-year-old man.

During the search operation, officers recovered a folding knife and MVR 39,695 in cash, police said. The items were seized as part of the ongoing investigation.

The suspects were later brought before the Criminal Court for remand hearings. Police said the court ordered four of the men to be held in custody for 15 days, while the remaining two were released subject to conditions imposed by the court.

Authorities have not disclosed further details regarding the alleged plot or identified any intended targets.

The Maldives Police Service said investigations into the case are continuing.

Violent crimes involving knives have remained a concern in the Greater Malé Region in recent years, prompting police to intensify intelligence-led operations targeting organised criminal groups and individuals suspected of planning violent offences. Authorities have repeatedly urged members of the public to report information that could help prevent violent crime.
