By Hussain Shinan Published 1 hour ago

A police officer has died while on active maritime duty after going missing during a nighttime operation, the Maldives Police Service has confirmed.

According to police, the incident occurred late Saturday night while officers were engaged in an operation aboard “Police Launch 57.”

Authorities said the officer was reported missing from the vessel during the operation, prompting an immediate search effort by fellow officers and relevant teams.

Following the search, the officer was located underwater and brought ashore. The body was subsequently transported to the AA. Mathiveri Health Centre, where medical personnel confirmed that he had already passed away.

The Maldives Police Service expressed condolences over the loss and said support is being provided to the officer’s family, friends and colleagues during what it described as an extremely difficult time.

The identity of the deceased officer has not yet been publicly disclosed.

While details surrounding the circumstances of the incident remain limited, police confirmed that an investigation has been launched to determine exactly what occurred.

The death has sent shockwaves through the law enforcement community, as police officers routinely participate in maritime patrols, search and rescue missions, law enforcement operations and other duties across the Maldives’ vast ocean territory.

Maritime operations are a critical component of policing in the Maldives, where officers often work in challenging sea conditions while carrying out responsibilities across the country’s dispersed islands and atolls.

Police have not yet released further information regarding the operation that was underway at the time of the incident or the circumstances that led to the officer going overboard.

More details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
