State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has confirmed that electricity services have now been fully restored across all areas of Malé and Hulhumalé following a temporary outage earlier today.
According to the company, the disruption was caused by a technical issue that occurred while ongoing upgrade works were being carried out on the 50-megawatt power plant located in Hulhumalé.
STELCO had earlier announced that the powerhouse would be temporarily shut down between 3:00 AM and 8:00 AM as part of a planned operation to upgrade the facility’s power system and strengthen electricity services in the Greater Malé Region.
The company stated that teams had been actively working since early morning to complete the operation and restore normal electricity services as quickly as possible.
Following the restoration, STELCO requested customers who may still be experiencing isolated service interruptions to contact the company’s emergency hotline 104 or customer service center at 1545 for assistance.
The utility provider had previously stated that the upgrade project is aimed at improving the stability and reliability of electricity supply while enabling additional generation capacity to be connected to the national grid.
The early morning timing for the operation was selected due to lower expected electricity demand during the Eid holiday period.
