President Begins Three-Day Visit to Ten Islands in Northern Maldives

By Hussain Shinan Published January 28, 2025

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has departed on a three-day official visit to several islands in Haa Alif Atoll, in the far north of the Maldives.

During this tour, the President plans to visit ten islands—Dhihdhoo, Filladhoo, Hoarafushi, Ihavandhoo, Maarandhoo, Molhadhoo, Muraidhoo, Thakandhoo, Uligan, and Utheemu. The key focus of these stops is to engage with local councils, women’s development committees, and institutional leaders to address pressing development needs. President Muizzu is also scheduled to meet with island residents to better understand community priorities.

In addition to gathering input from the public, the President will inaugurate various government-led projects. Among the highlights are the opening of newly built council offices and police stations on select islands, as well as the launch of cold storage facilities, expanded ID card and passport issuance services, and new ATMs.

Another major milestone during this trip is the official rollout of the “Magey Solar Programme,” aimed at bolstering renewable energy initiatives in the region. President Muizzu is also set to witness the signing of agreements between local councils and the Bank of Maldives to establish ATM services in partnership with the communities.

The President is accompanied by several cabinet ministers and heads of government agencies, who will be meeting with their respective local counterparts to discuss ongoing projects and explore upcoming developments.

This visit forms part of a broader initiative by President Muizzu to tour all inhabited islands in the Maldives. Earlier this month, he made similar trips to Gaafu Alif, Gaafu Dhaalu, and Raa Atolls, highlighting his ongoing commitment to meeting local residents, councils, and institutions across the country.

The President is expected to conclude his visit to Haa Alif Atoll on Thursday.
