President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed were given a warm reception upon their arrival in Dh. Meedhoo on Sunday, as residents gathered in large numbers to welcome the presidential couple to the island.
People of various age groups lined the harbor area to greet the President and First Lady, creating a festive atmosphere following the ruling People’s National Congress’ (PNC) victory in the island’s recent council president by-election.
The visit comes a day after the PNC secured a decisive win in the closely watched election, with party candidate Suha Ibrahim emerging victorious in the race for Meedhoo Council President.
According to official results announced by the Elections Commission, Suha won 54.09 percent of the votes cast, giving the ruling party control of the council presidency.
President Muizzu, who also serves as leader of the PNC, traveled to the island to join celebrations marking the victory. The President is scheduled to attend a party rally in Meedhoo later tonight, where supporters are expected to gather to commemorate the election result.

The by-election attracted significant political attention due to its background. The vote was held following a High Court ruling linked to the outcome of the Local Council Elections held earlier this year.
The contest saw PNC candidate Suha Ibrahim once again face off against Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) candidate Mohamed Shahid in a rematch of the original council election.
Saturday’s result not only secured the council presidency for the ruling party but also strengthened the PNC’s presence in local governance on the island. The party went on to record victories in other contested seats as well, completing what supporters described as a clean sweep in Meedhoo.
The President’s visit highlights the importance the ruling party has attached to the outcome, particularly as political parties continue efforts to strengthen their support bases ahead of future national and local elections.
Residents welcoming the presidential couple reflected the celebratory mood on the island, with many gathering at the harbor shortly after their arrival.

President Muizzu has frequently traveled to islands across the Maldives since assuming office, combining official engagements with meetings aimed at hearing directly from local communities and monitoring development priorities.
The visit to Meedhoo comes as the administration continues to emphasize decentralization, island development and strengthening ties with communities across the atolls.
